You are eligible to apply for this program if you...
Teach Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian or Russian,
Able to travel to Washington DC for our in-person camp week (needs-based travel stipend provided).
Work at the primary (K-6th grade), secondary (7-12th grade), and/or university level, and
Work in dual-language, immersion, early exposure, and/or standard world language programs (in addition to other programs).
Free for all participants!
Access to online modules with recent research on second language learning and task-based language teaching tailored for enrolled participants.
Individualized feedback from experts in language learning and teaching on lesson plans and opportunities to troubleshoot and brainstorm ideas in a teacher learning community.
Needs-based travel stipend for in-person, week-long summer camp on Georgetown's campus (to flights, gas mileage, rideshare or parking costs).
Optional free lodging near Georgetown's campus for a 1 week, in-person summer camp in August 2024.
Breakfast, coffee, lunch and snacks provided for all in-person meetings.
Per diem for incidentals during the week-long summer camp.
Swag! T-shirts, mugs, notepads and pens provided during camp with Georgetown and STARTALK's logos.
Certificate of completion upon the conclusion of the summer camp for 120 hours of professional development.
The Georgetown STARTALK program includes 3 parts:
Pre-Camp (June 24-July 26, 2024| 30 hours, virtual/asynchronous)
Asynchronous modules in an online learning platform. Modules will include learning objectives, discussion boards, short assignments with feedback, video lectures from worldwide experts in second language acquisition, and lists of additional readings and resources specific to enrolled teachers.
Summer Camp (July 22, July 29-August 2, 2024| 60 hours, virtual and in-person elements)
Virtual orientation meeting and orientation assignment. Connect with language and content specialists and build your teacher learning community.
Week-long in-person summer camp. Option to stay on campus in a private dorm. Meals, per diem and learning supplies will be provided.
Five full-day workshop sessions run by language and content specialists on task design, adaptation, and sequencing for your language level and grade.
Camp conclusion. 1 week after summer camp, virtual meeting to discuss challenges, collaboratively brainstorm solutions and celebrate achievements.
Post-Camp (August 9 & September, 2023| 30 hours virtual with synchronous and asynchronous elements)
Virtual meetings and reflective assignments designed to deepen learning from the summer camp.
Professional support through feedback from camp staff and online trouble shooting workshop sessions.
Total time commitment per educator: 120 PD hours.
